Face, panels and sheet piling
The water-facing surface may be made from precast or cast concrete, interlocking vinyl or steel sheets, wood members or another engineered system. Its thickness and appearance tell only part of the story. Depth, reinforcement, connection details and soil conditions matter.
Cap and wale
A concrete cap or structural wale helps connect the top of individual elements and spread loads. Cracks, spalls, exposed reinforcement or separation can be important, but a cap repair alone will not correct failed anchors or loss of supporting soil.
Tie rods, anchors and deadmen
Anchored walls commonly use rods connected to buried anchors. Because these elements are hidden, changes in wall alignment, localized movement or distress near connection points may prompt investigation. Excavating to look for them can destabilize soil and should be planned by a qualified professional.
Joints, filters and drainage
Joints permit construction and material movement. Filter systems are intended to keep soil while allowing water to move. Surface drainage controls how much upland water reaches the wall. When these functions break down, the result may appear as soil loss, staining, seepage or pressure-related movement.
Toe, embedment and scour protection
The portion below visible grade helps resist sliding, rotation and undermining. Water-side scour can reduce support without changing the top immediately. Do not assume the original embedment from what can be seen at low tide.
