How a Seawall Works

A residential seawall is not merely a fence against water. It is a soil-retaining system working at the boundary between changing water levels and upland loads.

The wall is balancing several forces

Upland soil and anything placed on it create lateral pressure toward the water. Water may act on either side. Wakes, waves and currents act on the exposed face. During storms, saturated soil can become heavier while rapid changes in water level alter the support on the water side. The system succeeds when its sheet, piles or panels, embedment, anchors, cap, joints, toe and drainage work together.

Why a seawall can look sound while soil is being lost

Many critical parts are underground. A joint, penetration, failed filter or drainage path can carry fine soil through or beneath an otherwise straight wall. The earliest visible clue may be a depression behind the cap, settling pavers or recurring fill loss. Filling the low spot without locating the pathway can hide the symptom while the process continues.

A seawall is not a complete flood guarantee

A wall can reduce erosion and resist water to its design condition, but water may overtop it, move around its ends, rise through drainage systems or reach the property from another direction. FEMA flood maps and local emergency guidance remain relevant even where a seawall exists.
