Component diagnosis

Seawall Cap, Joint and Tieback Problems

These three components do different jobs. Damage may be connected, but repairing the most visible one is not always the same as restoring system capacity.

Cap distress

Cracks, spalls, exposed steel, separation and settlement can result from material deterioration, panel movement, impact or load redistribution. Determine whether the cap is decorative, connective, structural or serving several roles.

Joint distress

Open joints can permit soil migration, but some joints are intended to move or drain. A repair must retain soil without unintentionally trapping water pressure. Observe whether soil, water or rust is emerging and whether adjacent panels are offset.

Tiebacks and anchors

Hidden rods and anchors resist earth pressure in many wall systems. Corrosion, connection loss, inadequate anchorage, construction damage or added loads can reduce performance. Their condition usually cannot be confirmed from the wall face alone.

Scope questions

  • What evidence connects the visible symptom to the proposed repair?
  • Will the repair restore soil retention, drainage, structural capacity or only appearance?
  • How will hidden anchor condition be verified?
  • What happens at untreated adjacent sections?
