Hurricane Milton and Southwest Florida Seawalls

Milton crossed Florida's west coast in Sarasota County. For seawall decisions, the important question is not the storm's category alone... it is what water, waves, rainfall and debris did at the property.

Category does not describe every waterfront load

The Saffir-Simpson category is based on wind. Seawall effects also depend on surge timing, local water depth, wave exposure, tide, rainfall, drainage, debris and the pre-existing condition of the wall.

Compare with Helene and Ian records

Properties affected by multiple events may show layered damage. Keep separate photo sets and repair documents. An estimate that attributes all current work to a single event should explain the evidence.

Inspection priorities

  • Alignment and cap elevation
  • Ends, returns and neighbor transitions
  • Toe support, riprap and scour
  • Backfill loss and drainage paths
  • Dock, lift and utility connections
  • Repairs completed between storms
